Henry Lowcay was born in 1740 at Waterford, Ireland. He left to join the Royal Navy, and served as a Warrant Officer. He was Master's Mate of the Swallow, sloop of war, on a voyage of discovery to the South Seas in 1766-69. He settled in Portsea, England.

His six sons all followed him in naval careers, some serving with distinction. They stayed in the Portsea area, except for Robert who ultimately settled in Plymouth, and grandson Henry, who migrated to France.

Robert’s family continued in the naval tradition, with one son becoming Fleet Paymaster, and another Assistant Paymaster.

One grandson, William migrated to Australia in 1882, and ultimately New Zealand. A great grandson, James, migrated to Canada. Another great grandson, Harry, migrated to New Zealand also, via Australia.

It is considered that the surname “Lowcay” was gone from England by the middle of the twentieth century.
